Update on my Traveller's Blanket

I started my Traveller's Blanket in May 2020 based on a course by Dejanne Cevaal. This will be my second stitching project for the next part of my #100dayschallenge on Instagram.

Traveller's Blanket so far

Mixing up projects and techniques

This project has what I love best - a mixture of different projects and techniques (links in Related links below).
  • Meditation stitching - after reading an article by Liz Kettle in the October/November 2019 edition of the Quilting Arts magazine, I started making 4" squares. It was very calming and creative, but what to do with all of those little squares?
  • Hand-dyed fabric - I've been hand-dyeing fabric for a while now. I use scraps in my meditation stitching and used a large piece as the base for my Traveller's Blanket.
  • Hexies - you may know that I have an on/off obsession with hexies, the English paper pieced ones (EPP). During #100hexies100days2021, I embroidered on some larger hexies. I'll be including them in this project
  • Sashiko stitching - I have even included a square of Sashiko stitching😊
  • Embroidery - you may have figured out that I love embroidery...but get quickly bored of doing the same thing for too long. This is another great project for trying out new things and stitching some old favourites.

A gaggle of hexies

I'm not sure what a whole bunch of hexies are known as, other than possibly a quilt in the making! 😁

Adding more hexies

This week I wasn't up to much, quilting wise, so I decided to make a few more hexie flowers for the ever expanding Hexie Lap Quilt. There's not much to say, so here is a thousand words worth in pictures....

Hexie Lap Quilt expanded by two large flowers and a few smaller ones

I had a lovely supper with a dear friend this week. After supper we walked to nearby Maplelawn Garden. I wish I had brought my Red hexie flower - it would have looked at home with the beebalm!

What I learned
  • I don't think that I always need big serious projects to post. A little short post with lots of eye candy is a good idea sometimes!
  • When I don't feel like quilting or stitching, adding hexie flowers to my Hexie Lap Quilt is a great mindless way to pass the time in my own garden.

Mystery UFO

This quilt has now been on my design wall for several months. I felt like doing something different, so I thought that I would work on it. I had the fabric strips and extra pieces in a project box but no pattern...where did this project come from?

Mystery UFO (UnFinished Object) solved

First clue: I checked to see when I had first taken pictures of the quilt on my design wall. I found this picture in December on my Studio Tour post, and on my phone it first appeared in mid-November. It would seem that I didn't write a post about it.

Here it is on my design wall during my studio tour.

It first appeared in Mid-November

Second Clue: The pattern wasn't in my project box, so it might come from an e-book.

It took me a while to go through my e-books but sure enough, the pattern is in Stripology 2 by GE Quilt Designs. I know that I saw the quilt in a blog post and loved it, but of course I can't find it now....so if it was in your blog, please let me know. I even wrote to the blogger because I was nervous about the piecing, but she reassured me, and it wasn't too difficult.😊

* Update: Wendy of Pieceful Wendy found the post for me - it was Nancy of Grace and Peace Quilting. She made her quilt 36" x 36" because the pattern for the quilt is pretty small (24" x 29"). I'm not up to making it bigger with more hexies, but that's what borders are for 😊. I thought that I had finished the quilt on Sunday (July 25) but this week I'll audition some fabrics for the borders. It's going to get done! Thanks Wendy and Nancy!

Progress and stitching up the columns

I say that it wasn't too difficult, but this is from someone who is accuracy challenged and pretty intimidated by piecing. My very favourite block is the 9-patch! I'm not really a fan of piecing but when I make a quilt that isn't improv pieced, it's almost always scrappy so that I don't have to cut all of the fabric at once.

Before I found the pattern, I thought that I would just have a go at stitching the rows together. After stitching a few, I realized that I was probably not doing this right because I had not idea how I was going to attach the second row to the first - they are all hexies! That's why the seam ripper made an appearance. It turns out that the pieces are stitched one column at a time.

My seam ripper was very useful!

It was also handy when I sewed my first two half hexies together in that column. I'm really not good at thinking in 3 dimensions, so I ended up having to pin them together to figure out where to stitch. After that, it went quite well.

Pinning the pieces to get the correct angle

You can see the weird piecing at the top of each column. The pattern calls for cutting the extra pieces into quite smaller pieces to finish up the top. I really don't like dealing with small pieces, so I'm going to stitch these partial pieces to the top of the strip and then trim them when the top is all pieced. This should give me some added security since I'm really good at having these types of pieces be too small. 😊

Adding extra long top pieces that will be trimmed off

Since my last design wall picture, I've cut and pieced the rest of the strips so that the quilt top will be 6 hexies by 8 hexies. It's supposed to be a 24" x 29" crib quilt.

What I learned

  • It might be a good idea to write the name of the e-book in my project box.
  • I remembered why I don't really like piecing but it wasn't that bad. I've attached 5 of the 8 hexies in each column and all of the pieces are on my design wall.
  • I've been really restless and not feeling like FMQ or hand stitching, so this is a nice change.
  • It'll be nice to have something else on my design wall!

Another Hexie Mania

I hope that February has been treating you well. Personally, I'm getting ready for Spring, whether Mother Nature cooperates or not 😊 Actually after some cold and lots of snow, they are predicting above freezing during the upcoming days. I'll take it!

Hexie Mania

Since the last few weeks have been about resting, I've been adding to my hexie collection. It's about as slow and mindless as it gets.

Progress on my hexie blanket

This is what it looked like the last time I played with it. Generally the mass of hexies are from the 100 Hexies in 100 Days parties on Instagram (2018 and 2019) #100hexies100days2018 and #100hexies100days2019  You can find out more in Related link below.

Three hexie flowers on one edge

I won't bore you with a play-by-play but here are the highlights 😊

Adding large hexie flowers to the edge

Eight hexie flowers on the border

Adding the ninth hexie flower

My very loose plan is to add flower hexies around the borders and probably some white or beige hexies around those to finish it off.  I now have the width of the lap quilt, so it's a matter of adding to the height and then to keep adding flower hexies around the borders.

What I learned

  • I'm not going for beautiful but I hope that the flowers around the mass of bright fabric in the middle will help bring it together. Anyway it's too much work to give to anyone...this is my mass of bright fabric 😎
  • It's amazing how much this project has grown since the beginning of February. Doing hexies and listening to audio books has been a real treat. Very calm!
  • As I add to the middle puddle of hexies, I think that I'll sneak in a few odd shapes to keep it interesting. A diamond or two certainly can't hurt!

Hexies on Free Motion Mavericks

Welcome to Free Motion Mavericks (Week 244)

Enjoying some relaxing time outside
I'm on a resting holiday. That means sleeping a lot (up to 12 hours a day!), reading, quilting, and a little bit of gardening and blogging. So far I've managed to keep it relatively quiet except for my felting miss-adventure (see Related posts below).

I'm working on piecing one UFO and I did finish my Kingfisher Stitch-Along quilt top. I'll write a post before the end of the week since that was my July and August OMG.

Since I haven't done any free motion quilted (FMQ) this week, here are some great hexies that I'm working on for the #100hexies100days2019 on Instagram, hosted by Sew Foxy Mama (@sewfoxymama).

Here are weeks 4 to 6. We are now on Week 9 and I just have to post them - almost caught up!

Week 4: Starts with B
I had a lot of fun taking pictures of these hexies at work. Even my co-workers got in on the fun!

B is for Bench
B is for Bescherelle
(from my high school days!)

B is for Ball (my colleague's)

B is for books
(thank goodness not mine!)

B is for a very proud Beaver

B is for Binder and Box

B is for BAHHHHH
(That's an old postcard from the Twist Fibre Festival)

Week 5: Rainbow
A rainbow on the Gauguin Portraits exhibition
catalogue since my daughter and I spent so
much time there for her school class.

A rainbow in front of our
paint pouring masterpieces

Week 6: Adventure
What does adventure mean? For me it's road trips,
trying new quilting techniques or enjoying a great book

Adventure among the flowers

The golf hexie is for my husband :-)

Hexie Extravaganza

It's that time of the year again!

One hundred hexies for 100 days! (#100hexies100days2019)

Week 1 is about me
This year, Sew Foxy Mama (@sewfoxymama) started the fun one month earlier. I'm glad since this is the perfect summer project - low key and with hexies 😊

Week One: Me

7 hexies about me

  • M. French Roast coffee bean that keeps me going in the morning
  • paw prints for those I love
  • colourful and pretty flowers
  • a cacti for the desert that I am drawn to
  • fabric from my first home-made curtains - very colourful
  • colourful modern fabric for the modern art that I'm starting to appreciate!

Close-up of some of my favourite things

Chevy - a paw print owner I love

Week Two: Summerlicious

Summer fun, at least when the heat is reasonable! 😊

Close-up of my summer fun hexies

Part of the fun is the photo shoots. It's great to go out and take pictures of hexies and it's a lot of fun seeing everyone's photos!

Summer hexies lost in the foliage :-)

This is my favourite photo of my beloved "Let's hibernate" cup, which is what I would and sometimes do in the cold, cold winter. I just wish that I also had an "estivation" cup - for burrowing away to hide from the summer heat!

I wish I had a "Let's estivate!" cup

Week Three: Teeny Tiny Things

Teeny and tiny are relative terms - when an image on fabric fits onto a 1" hexie - it's teeny!

It was relatively cool today so it was a great time for a photo shoot in a nearby park.
Teeny tiny things for week three

Hexie among the rudbeckia

These are the themes for the 100 days.

If you're on Instagram, check out the fun!

What I learned
  • Hexies are fun and not worth getting stressed about! Perfect for a tired quilter 😊

Slow stitching Update

To try to minimize the evenings when I go home and do absolutely nothing quilty,  I joined The 100 Day Project (#the100dayproject) on Instagram. Will it work? I guess we'll find out...

The 100 Day Project on Instagram

Herringbone stitch added to the mix
Why would I want to add this to my plate? Well, it's on Instagram, so it takes about 2 minutes to post, which is a plus. Also, even if I'm wiped, it would be nice to do something that is productive but simple and stress free. My answer to that is to follow #the100dayproject and at the very least do 10 minutes of hand-stitching (embroidery or English paper piecing, etc) a day. It's a goal and no one will care if I do it or not - but it would be nice!

I won't be posting everything on the blog, but I'm sure that I can manage an occasional update. 😊

While I was practicing the herringbone stitch and playing with hexies, I created a fabric page dedicated to the Herringbone stitch.

I got the idea from Janine at Rainbow Hare, who is also participating in the Take A Stitch Tuesday (TAST). I get bored easily and love the embroidery work that she is doing. One of her ideas is to create a page of the different stitches. You can check it out in the Related links below.

This is my Herringbone page so far. I've been experimenting with the size and angles of the stitches, and of course the more colour the better. And, just for something different, I added hexies to the mix. I'm starting to think that everything is better with hexies (and chocolate)!
Herringbone page
I started the chain stitch page a while back. This week, I did a little bit of embroidery in the car on my way to work. It was a really great way to start the day. I'm going to try to keep that up!
Chain Stitch page
I've also working on the final hexie flowers for my Kingfisher Stitch Along. The Stitch Along started last May and finished in July, so I'm not a year late....yet. Hopefully the sewing of the diamonds will go well. My objective is to finish it by the end of July, so that it's only one year late!
Last two diamonds coming along
Love that blue-black batik!
What I learned
  • I need a variety of small projects to keep me going. If I have a few easy ones started, I'm more likely to pick one up in the evening. That's the theory anyways.
  • I'm still following TAST but getting pretty far behind. When I feel ambitious I can work on new embroidery stitches, and when I'm not, I'll just do more chain stitch or practice other stitches that I'm getting better at.
  • I also want to experiment with the size of the stitches as well as the size of the embroidery thread and perle cotton I use.
  • I have a colleague at work who is learning to embroider - so next week we are going to embroider during our lunch.
