SAHRR Cowboy Panel Update

Hi! I hope that you are well and enjoying the weekend. We've had a lovely quiet day so since I had a bit of time, I was able to add three blocks to the cowboy panel and write this short post😊.

Cowboy panel blocks

As you may have seen in my last post and around the internet, week 5's block is a half or quarter log cabin. I made a quarter log cabin block and then realised that I had made two of these last week as insert blocks. In the image below, you can see on the right the three quarter log cabin blocks. One has two cows with dots while the other has a horse and then another cow.

Thirteen blocks made so far

Since I love them so much, I made a real log cabin block to change things up. It's so much fun featuring interesting fabrics in the middle.

A real log cabin block with Canada geese

A quarter log cabin with polka dot cows

Then I decided to make another insert block that doesn't look like a log cabin. This is one of my favourite fabrics so it's great to have another block with horses. It was also a great way to add the gray fabric into another block.

Insert block with my favourite horse fabric

So far, here's what's happening:
  • Week 1: 2 Art Square blocks
  • Week 2: 1 Friendship star block (with HSTs) and 1 framed fabric block
  • Week 3: 2 Nine patch star blocks and 1 framed pocket block
  • Week 4: 3 Insert blocks, but two are more like Quarter Log Cabin blocks
  • Week 5: 1 Quarter Log Cabin block, 1 Log Cabin block and 1 Insert block
It's difficult to know how each week's blocks will related to each other since we only find out on Monday about the upcoming week. That's ok since blocks can fit in more than one categories. I figure that I have another 5 blocks to make to go around this panel. I'm really looking forward to Monday to see what our last block is.

I don't have much to add about what I learned so I'm going to leave this post as is, except to include Related links and linking parties.

SAHRR - Week 5 and Free Motion Mavericks

Hello and welcome 😊 With any luck the snow has stopped coming down for a while. ❄❄❄❄❄ I'm not sure where we'll be putting it if more comes our way. Enough of that....here's what's been happening in my studio this week!

Week 5 of SAHRR

This week I started with the Christmas bears panel since it was on my design wall. The block was chosen by Brenda of Songbird Designs. It's the half or quarter log cabin. The log cabin block is one of my favourite blocks to make because it's easy! It can be wonky and still look like a log cabin 😁.

Can you spot the two quarter log cabin blocks? Here are close ups.

The other quarter log cabin block, mostly in yellow and blue

I've been trying to use some of the fabrics that I previously used to make the quilt more cohesive. The blocks will be re-organised, and I envision a thin plain border around the panel - we'll see!

So far, here's what's happening:
  • Week 1: 4 Art Square blocks
  • Week 2: 2 Fairy Floss inspired blocks (HSTs)
  • Week 3: 4 Friendship star blocks
  • Week 4: 3 Insert blocks
  • Week 4: 2 Quarter Log Cabin blocks
That's a total of 15 blocks to date. I figure that I need another 7 blocks to go around the panel. There's one more week to go. After that I'll make whatever blocks I like, either repeats or new ones. It'll depend on how I feel. 😊

What I learned and Updates
  • You all know about "best laid plans..." Hubby was injured a couple of weeks ago and it would seem that shoveling and going from his office in the basement to our room two flights up has aggravated the problem. Thank goodness he's very self sufficient, but there is a limit! I am hoping that doing all those stairs a few times a day will help me 😉
  • I haven't tackled the second panel yet but hope to on the weekend.
  • I did work on February's Table Scrap Challenge - I played with blue scraps and made a baby quilt. I'll be showing you that soon. I figured I may as well make a child's quilt (36" x 40") for donating through our guild since I took a child's quilt to FMQ for them. That will be two finishes soon.
  • I talked about making a small Kawandi style mat for my niece. I made it quickly so that I would have something to stitch while our friends and hubby were watching a hockey game. I don't want to offend anyone but I really don't like sports.
  • Finally I have a small placemat sewn up to place under Poppy's water dish at home. Going through my scraps, I found a bag with my doggy fabric, so Poppy will have her own placemat. 🐕 It just needs to be FMQ.
  • I shared with you my first Poppy placemat but it wasn't quilted at the time. Here is the final version.

Lots of snow - thank goodness Poppy
didn't see anything to chase after!

Blocks for both panels with SAHRR

Hi and welcome. I've been spending as much time as possible in my studio. There's still just enough space to work in and that's what matters! I've been enjoying piecing my blocks. Now that I've stopped playing with 8 HSTs (half square triangles) in one block, it's all good😊

Block with inserts for the cowboy panel

This week is week 4 in the SAHRR (Stay At Home Round Robin) challenge. We were asked to make blocks with inserts. That's a pretty wide open brief and I may have pushed the limit, but here are my blocks!

I just had to put some of this lovely horsey love fabric in the quilt. I think that the radiating circles make a nice contrast.

Horsey love fabric and radial inserts

These next blocks have a little more than inserted lines but I did want to add these two farm animals to the mix - a horse and a cow. I looked in a bag for scraps that I thought were in it. I didn't find the ones I wanted but I found a lot of very nice fabric to use. I even tried to make a flying geese. It's not a great attempt but the fabric plays nice with the others, so it's in!

Horse and cow fabric with many inserts.

So far, I have 10 blocks for the cowboy panel. I do want to add some friendship stars to it since they are so easy to make! We have two rounds left in the challenge so I'll see what else I might add.

Oh yes, I also added a pocket block to the mix. The plaid shirt that I used had a pocket - that's so perfect for a child's quilt. 😃 You can see it near the bottom of the panel.

Stars and inserts for the Christmas panel

Monday evening I put aside my cowboy fabric and spent most of Tuesday making blocks for the Christmas panel. I made 2 insert blocks. One looks like a present - I didn't think that through but I love it! The other one is more of a V shape - sort of like the tree. You can see these blocks on the photos below.

Present block at the top
V shape block at bottom

I then made 2 different sets of HST - this time with the fabric right side up!😉 These friendship star blocks went together easily. I love them!

Here is a photo of my blocks so far. I'm looking forward to rearranging them once all of the blocks are done. For the next two weeks, it's going to be about choosing the fabric and colours to make the whole thing cohesive.

The Christmas panel so far...

What I learned
  • I'm really liking the process of making different blocks, choosing fabrics and colours that work.
  • I know that a couple of my blocks in the Christmas panel don't really work yet but I'm hoping that adding some of that same colour elsewhere and possibly moving the blocks will help.
  • I do want to add more green and yellow to the mix in the next two weeks.
  • This is the perfect opportunity to try new things - if the blocks or colours don't play well with the others, I don't have to use them.
  • I'm feeling more confident about the cowboy panel. I'll just add more green.
  • Overall, I'm really enjoying working with traditional quilt blocks and I love the fact that I don't have to make tons of the same thing 😊.
  • It's really weird but I feel at a loss, not having to work on either a Project Quilting piece or SAHRR. I know that I have other stuff to do but....

Free Motion Mavericks

Welcome to week 519 of Free Motion Mavericks! It was another great week - thanks for linking up! Here are the projects from last week that included FMQ, ruler work or walking foot quilting.

Kat at Scrapbox Quilts made a cute blue quilt for Bear Hug Missions.

Donnalee was procrastinating binding her King size quilt and made pillows, pillow shams and runners to go with her quilt. They are so lovely...and it turns out that putting in the binding wasn't as bad as she expected! I'm sure that we're all looking forward to seeing her quilt on the bed with all of its accessories!

Sally at Painted Thread made a Common Block Postcard for PQ 16.3. It wasn't as straight forward as she would have liked - but the positive side is that she learned a lot 😊! If you don't recognize the blocks, check out her post.

I hope that you don't mind some self promotion - but here is my "Snow Happens" wall hanging. I managed to forget to link up! It had quite a bit of FMQ on both sides of the border diamonds, mostly loops and snowflakes. I showed restraint by only outlining the embroidery 😀.

PQ 16-3 Common Blocks & Free Motion Mavericks

Hi and welcome! I hope that you're hibernating in your studios and playing with fabric 😊. It's a great way to cope. I've also read books and listened to many audio books - my way of coping when fabric isn't enough. 😉 Let's talk about lovely stuff and fuel our creativity.

Common Blocks

This week's theme for Project Quilting is Common Blocks. I might have been disappointed in the theme if I hadn't been totally immersed in block construction for SAHRR. Since I'm on a roll, I might as well keep going.

Common Quilt Blocks wall hanging

I used the beautiful hand-dyed fabrics that were gifted to me a while back by now-retired textile artist, Elaine Quehl. I was lucky to inherit bags of the fabric she took to workshops when she was teaching. Elaine was surprised that I was still playing with these. I think that I'm probably good for a couple more years. 😍

Three common blocks - friendship star, nine patch and pinwheel

I chose these blocks because I made 8 half-square triangles at a time and then figured out how I could use them! I also wanted something that was very common and also easy. I find that if I can make the HST then sewing them together is not too difficult.

Quilting the blocks that were to be turned into a journal cover

My blocks are pretty good but unfortunately I wasn't as careful with adding strips as I was piecing the blocks. In my quilting universe, wonky is more than fine! I was going to turn these blocks into a journal cover but last night, after quilting the piece, I just had no patience to keep going. I ended up using the pillowcase method to add a backing, even after quilting it with its own backing.

Quilting on the envelope/pillowcase back

Stitching the edge of the whole piece and then going back to add a few quilt lines to the blue fabric in the front made the new backing more than secure.

You can see on the photo that I used many easy FMQ designs, from squiggly lines, loops and twists (I call them fj because that's what you're writing in cursive!) to feathers.

When I showed my daughter the placemat, she was thrilled and asked if she could hang it on her wall. I agree with her that the fabrics look so great together. I'm glad when my colour instincts work!

February's One Monthly Goal (OMG)

I'm working on many projects. Some will be finished very soon (like my "Snow Happens" wall hanging) and others are scheduled to be finished at the end of March (the two SAHRRs). There is a quilt that doesn't need much work finish, but unless it's elevated in priority, it could languish for months. Therefore, my February's OMG is my Floral Fusion wall hanging, the quilt a-long hosted by Denise at The Quiltery.

Update: I've almost finished my Floral Fusion wall hanging but didn't get it done in February since my daughter hopes to paint her room and wasn't sure which colour I should use to bind the quilt. It's get done as soon as I know...and I'll be posting it when it's finished.

Floral Fusion just needs a little more FMQ and a binding!

What I learned
  • I enjoyed making these blocks based on the 8 HST that I had made.
  • Since I was going to make a journal cover, I needed the piece with the three blocks to finish at 14" x 10". Since my friendship star block was 6", I added a few borders. For my 4" nine patch and pinwheel blocks, I ended up adding strips of fabric between and around them. Unfortunately, I didn't trim both blocks to the same size - that's why they are slightly wonky! I don't know why I thought that this would work... I would say it was the fatigue talking.
  • No wonder I wasn't up to making a journal cover. I could have waited a day or two, but I want to make more blocks for the SAHRR, so I really didn't want to spend more time on this piece.
  • Did you notice that the photos of the piece are taken both as a placemat and in a different direction as a wall hanging? It's my daughter who turned the placemat around and frankly, it looks much better in that direction.
  • I'm so glad that my daughter wants this on her wall. It'll look great over her new desk!

SAHRR and Snow Happens on Free Motion Mavericks

Allô and welcome 😊. It's a lovely snowy day which started with a guided tour of the Woven Histories exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Canada and some quality time with sweet Poppy! I saw the exhibition when it first opened - it's really amazing, but it's even better when someone is telling you a story about some of the artists and pieces.

First round of blocks for SAHRR

Monday was the first day of instructions for making the blocks for our quilt. We got to choose a block that started with the first letter of our name. I chose the Art Square Block that I found online. There were instructions but just the very old fashion way of making blocks, i.e. attach one triangle to another. You do know that I'm accuracy challenged, so this was very challenging. After making four Art Square Blocks, I took the time to find alternate ways of making it, such as the stitch and flip, or making 4 flying geese at a time.

Four Art Square Blocks for the Christmas panel

You may notice that I changed the order of my blue and gray fabrics in the flying geese block part. I originally wanted the gray to be in the centre but I didn't cut my fabric properly for the first block, so blue in the centre it was. Since I only cut my fabric one block at a time, I decided to try both ways. I like them both, but I do prefer the gray surrounding the block's centre.

I've had to take almost everything off my design board - I don't make many large projects. Since the panel is quite long, I'll probably only do one border but with different blocks. We'll see. I do love these blocks in the corners.

Christmas panel with the four Art Square blocks

I've looked at other blocks starting with "A" for my cowboy panel, although now that I know how I could make these blocks more easily, I may stay with this block. I've washed, trimmed and ironed the panel, so I'm ready to go. I'm slowly picking fabric to go with the panel. I love the muted colours and am looking for some denim colours, browns and the cactus green. I may even have some plaids that would go well 😊.

Next, making blocks for the Cowboy panel

"Snow Happens" wall hanging

I finished the border around "Snow Happens". It's not as bad as it could have been. 😁 My points are still mostly there but the diamonds got cut off on the side borders. That was because I didn't follow the instructions - I just don't cut things at ⅛". Since I'm not very accurate anyway, that ⅛" will not make much difference (OK it would but this is my excuse!) Anyway, some of those diamonds got cut but it still looks pretty darn cute!

"Snow Happens" wall hanging

I had some lovely blue Christmas fabric but wasn't sure about using them since they have a little bit of other colours, like the little snowman with a red scarf! I don't think that these little pops of colour distract from the blue.

What I learned
  • I know that my piecing skills are not great. Before I started the Art Square blocks, I should have researched how to make it using more modern tricks. I didn't realise that I was making a flying geese within the block and that I could easily make 4 at once!
  • Using these faster methods don't guarantee more accuracy but at least it's a bit easier!
  • I go so long without making quilting blocks that I forget how frustrating they can be.
  • For the other blocks in the SAHRR, I'll try to find easy alternatives if I have to.
  • I did go through my many magazines and books of blocks and found a few alternatives, as well as a few tricks, so I hope that I'll be OK for the next ones.
  • As I mentioned already, rounding up the measurements to not use ⅛" wasn't brilliant, but I suspect that my blocks would not have fit anyway. I think that the best way to make sure that such a border works is to make the pieced border first and then work from there to add inner borders that will be large enough to fit them. It's a little late, but if there is a next time, I've written it here!
  • I'm actually looking forward to making the blocks for my cowboy panel. So we'll see how that goes!
  • Update: I just figured out that my lovely Art Square blocks are the same as version 2 of Kathleen's King Crown block...and I thought they looked too complicated to make!😂

Sun flames, swirls and rail fence blocks

Hello and welcome to Week 410 of Free Motion Mavericks. I'm glad that you stopped by. I free motion quilted (FMQ) some flames and swirls to the sun in the middle of the Version 2.0 quilt.

Flames and Swirls

Last week I finished the Free Motion Mavericks post by showing you the Sun that I stitched with the walking foot in the middle blue section of the quilt. The section is not quite finished but I did add flames extending between the sun's points and then swirls in the middle of the sun.

This first picture isn't as pretty but does show the FMQ well. Between each point in the sun is a flame. I was very nervous about stitching in such a large area so I drew a few flames on the paper template that I had created. It only took a few to figure out that I wanted the flame to start outside of where the Sun's points intersected.

Sun with flames and swirls

After finishing the flames, I FMQ just inside the circle of the sun. It was much more wobbly than the original Sun stitched with the walking foot but I just wanted to highlight the circle. I then started stitching the swirls. That went fairly well since each swirl wasn't that large. The design also allowed me to stop often to get my barring.

Another look at the Sun, the flames and the swirls

When I finished the FMQ, I started cleaning up the threads in the back. I discovered that when I had used the walking foot and had jumped to the next flame, the stitching was starting to come undone😲. I thought that I had added a few stitches in place but obviously not enough. The easiest thing to do was to FMQ over the original circle and take a detour over the small triangles where the sun's points intersected. This helped to highlight the Sun's circle as well as stitch over those threads that would have undone.😊

Making Rail Fence Blocks

This week I also made rail fence blocks for Cynthia's (Cynthia Brunz Designs) charity quilts . At the end of November, she asked if quilters could send her some dark blue and brown or tan rail fence blocks. You know how I'm accuracy challenged, so I thought that making blocks would be easier than making a whole quilt.

I might have been mistaken in my assumptions 😊! Getting those rail fence blocks to finish at 5½" x 5½" took a lot of hard work but was probably a very good exercise for me. Of the 14 blocks that I made, 12 are good enough to send to Cynthia. Two were a whole ½" smaller, so I kept those and made two mug rugs. I did learn a lot and I'm including that below.

First mug rug

Second mug rug

Two lovely mug rugs

I quilted them differently, with the walking foot, to see the effect. The top mug rug was stitched more or less in-the-ditch, while the mug rug below was stitched perpendicular to the piecing. It really gives a different effect.

What I learned

  • Drawing the sun flames on the large paper template was a great idea. It helped me understand the scale of the flames and figure out where to start and finish them relative to the points.
  • I used a Frixion pen to draw the first flame on the quilt. After that I was confident that I could do it without the marking.
  • I was a bit upset when I saw that the thread at the beginning of the Sun's points were unravelling. I just ignored it while I finished up the swirls and then realised that FMQ over them would solve the problem. That is what I do when I come to the end of my bobbin thread. I just stitch over a part that is already stitched and then keep going - so that's essentially what I did. I checked the back of the quilt, and it's going to be fine 😊.
  • As for the rail fence blocks, I was very careful in the sewing and pressing of the blocks, so the problem has to be in the initial cutting of the fabric.
  • I did as Cynthia suggested and made the block length longer so that I could trim them, but my problem was with the width. After trimming a couple of blocks, that's when I realised that I had a potential problem. From then on, I was very accurate in my sewing. I'm really happy that only two blocks didn't make it.
