Playing and I Quilted This!

Bonjour and welcome ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I spent most of the day outside playing with hexies - that was nice ๐Ÿ˜ I'm writing this ahead of time since I'll be in Toronto for my semi-annual eye exam. I used to be able to stitch in the car but not anymore. That means that not much will get done quilting wise, so I may as well prepare this post before I go.

Playing with FMQ Designs

As you saw last week, I finally started quilting Square Dance, a baby quilt. Since then I've been FMQ one block per day. I'm so excited - it's pure play. Of course I said that I would keep it simple but you know me...a chance to practice and play with FMQ. I just can't help it. ๐Ÿ˜

Since the first block I FMQ just had straight lines, I wanted to add some curves into the next one.

Straight lines with "C" curves

The next one, on the turquoise background was FMQ with Lori Kennedy's Swirling Stars. I drew the design on the fabric with a white chalk pen.

Swirling Stars

The maroon block has a pickle ball fabric in the middle, so I practiced drawing on paper and then on the fabric, pickle ball pallets and balls. The rest was FMQ with squiggly lines.

FMQ pickle ball pallets and squiggly lines

Summer Hexies Sew Along

As well as playing with FMQ, I also spent time doing EPP (English Paper Piecing), the wreath for the Summer Hexies Sew Along.

This is what I have done so far.

Hexie Wreath so far

Another double flower

I now have 10 single hexie flowers and 4 double hexie flowers. Now I need to make one double hexie flower and 8 single hexie flowers and the leaves. It's coming along nicely ๐Ÿ˜Š

Focus & Flow Course

I'm taking the Focus and Flow course offered by Fibre Arts Take Two. The course is taught by Karen Olson. It's a mindful eco-art program. Our first project was a teabag paper journal. I used inks for a few of the pages and then used a branch from my yard to put into the spine. The book is tied with sari yarn.

Teabag paper journal

It was a windy day - the pages wanted to dance

If you're wondering. teabag paper is a translucent paper that feels a lot like tissue paper. It's very durable and takes paint quite well. Apparently if you want to work with Japanese papers, this is an inexpensive way to get used to them.

What I learned
  • I made the teabag paper journal a while back and have finally returned to the course. I've missed making books so it's great to be back into it. This is definitely from an arts perspective.
  • Playing with hexies outside for most of the day was very relaxing. I'm motivated to finish the wreath since it's more than half done.
  • Choosing fabric that plays well with the initial fabrics I bought has been fun. A little variety is a very good thing!
  • FMQ the Square Dance quilt has been fun, from figuring out the designs to practicing them and then drawing them on the fabric. As I've said before, it's a good thing that I'm pretty good at following lines ๐Ÿ˜€

Some Procrastination and I Quilted This!

Hi and welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š I'm happy that I Quilted This! happens every week, otherwise I would be hiding somewhere with a book and ignoring the world! I did get a few things done, but mostly procrastinating - anything but finishing the Rainbow Neighbourhood quilt. I pushed encouraged myself and trimmed the quilt, picked the binding and cut it. At least there was progress. Let's check it out!

Trimming the Rainbow Neighbourhood Quilt

It's been trimmed and the binding has been picked and cut. Here's the proof.

Trimming the large lap quilt 62" x 64"

I even did the binding math because I didn't have much of my first choice of fabric. After doing the math, I knew that there wouldn't be enough but since I had lots of my second choice, that's what I'll be using. I'll be sewing it by machine and practicing my skills ๐Ÿ˜.

The quilt isn't totally FMQ but there's not much left - mostly fixing uncooperative thread and adding little details. I just wasn't in the mood to FMQ, so it was nice to keep going on the quilt. It won't be long now.

Summer Hexie Sew Along

I was shopping online for fabric (it was on sale!) and I found fabric that matches my original fabric pick. I'm not sure if it's the same line but it looks great. Here's what I have so far. I sent the first photo to my brother on August 12. The second photo was taken tonight, August 19.

In total there will be 18 single and 5 double-ring flowers. So far, I've made 6 single and 3 double-ring flowers - that's one third of the single and half of the double flowers๐Ÿ˜

Results on August 12

August 18 - the new fabric is in the inner flower at the bottom

I now have 12 single flowers to make while using some of the secondary fabric. There are two more double-ring flowers to make. I also have to figure out the leaves. The sew along finishes this week but I'll keep going. I'm really enjoying it.

Potato Chip Blocks

Everyone seems to be making potato chip blocks, so I looked into it and got hooked! My blocks are 12" with the middle and outside pieces in a colour (so far orange/yellow and the other two green) while the inner square is white/beige. As I took the photos, I realised that some need more contrast. Next time I'll take a quick picture before sewing everything together so that I'll know that the contrast is there.

Here are the four blocks that I've made.

Four 12" potato chip blocks so far

I have lots of side scrappy projects. There's no timelines or pressure to get them done and that's perfect. When I feel like playing with scraps, they are great therapy. I'll be playing with purple (or yellow) scraps soon for the Quilter's Cove SAL at the end of August ๐Ÿ˜Š

What I learned
  • I often trim and sew the binding to quilts that are not completely FMQ. As long as most of it is done, it really makes no difference. This helps me feel like I'm getting close to the end. I enjoy FMQ but sometimes I've tired of the project so this is a great way to keep going while taking a break from the FMQ.
  • I was very impressed with myself for doing the binding math. When it's something that I can visualise, I can usually figure it out.๐Ÿ˜
  • I'm looking forward to sewing the binding by machine and practicing those skills.
  • My hexie crown is coming along but I still have lots to do. I don't need to rush this - it's enjoyable and there's no urgency to finish it. I'm looking forward to having it all sewn together.
  • Potato chip blocks are fun to make. I do have to keep an eye on my contrast between the sections. Taking photos will tell me if the contrast is fine or not.
  • I've been going through my scrappy strips. I think that blue will be next.
  • I need to think about my next Quilter's Cove house. I'll check my fabric to see if I can get inspired. I know that I'll need at least one or two more fairy houses. I have the houses on the canal so it might be cool to make a cottage by the lake. I guess you'll just have to come back and see what happens! ๐Ÿ˜

Getting Things Done and I Quilted This!

Bonjour and welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š It's been a very busy time here, and not all quilting related. I am happy to say that I did manage to get many things done (but it's never as much as I'd like!) I took a road trip with Lise this week to Almonte. It wasn't as we planned but it was awesome and good to get away and spend time together. I bought some antique lace that I hope to use for art, hopefully soon ๐Ÿ˜. Let's get on with it, since it's already Thursday!

Blue Skies in the Rainbow Neighbourhood

After fixing an oops last week, I wanted to quilt something substantial on the Rainbow Neighbourhood quilt, so it was blue skies time. It wasn't without its minor frustrations but the top third of the sky is done. After considering my options, I went with a wave/meander. That's a good thing because my Jag really didn't want to play nice with the Bottom Line thread. I'm not sure that I could have FMQ anything more intricate.

I'm sorry for the quality of the pictures. Soon we'll have the whole thing photographed in great light (when it's done!)

Summer Hexie Sew Along

I've been making more hexies for the Summer Hexie Sew Along with Mad About Patchwork. I'm not exactly following the order of making thing but close enough! Here they are so far. I really wanted to see if the fabric I had chosen would play well together. I would say that they do! ๐Ÿ˜

Three single and two double flowers

I've got many more hexies prepped to stitch together so it is coming along well.

Bloomers Sew Along

I remembered that I wanted to sew more hexie flowers for the Bloomers SAL. I've prepared two more batik hexies but haven't stitched them to the pink backgrounds yet. Here are the five hexies and the flower blocks beneath them. They are hanging on my design wall, to which I added extra side panels so that I can hang wider projects.

Five Bloomer blocks with hexies

I'll be finishing two more hexies to attach to the other blocks. I still need to make one more flower block since it's easier to make the wall hanging with 8 blocks than 7.

Mรฉmรจre's Placemat

I've been stitching while watching videos. Here is what I've added to my grandmother's placemat.

Feather stitches

Variations on the blanket stitch

I'm not in love with the blanket stitches but not sure I'll be ripping them out, It'll depend on my mood the next time I work on it. At least perle cotton is easier to rip out than floss!

Plans for the rest of July
  • Finish FMQ the Rainbow Neighbourhood quilt
    • First row: finish grass and details in the yards and houses
    • Second row: finish sky, pond/park and the last house
    • Third row: finish night sky, yards and house details
  • Make the teal house for the Quilter's Cove QAL
  • Make the Blue Jays appliquรฉ and attach it to the t-shirt
  • Continue sewing together hexie flowers
What I learned
  • About that oops moment - I managed to quilt the batting to the backing when first quilting the orange house. I was hoping to just remove the batting without the stitches but the area was too large. So I removed the stitches and batting and re-quilted the side roof. It all went well, just time consuming.
  • Except for having problems with the white thread, I've been quilting with cotton and polyester thread without issues. I wanted to FMQ the sky without it standing out as much so I used a lovely Bottom Line light blue. I switched needles hoping it would help, but it didn't. I'm surprised that I've been quite patient, stopping when the thread misbehaves, removing it and then continuing. I have noticed that if I slow down, it happens less, so that's what I'm doing.
  • It's so weird since I wasn't able to use cotton thread to FQM my son's quilt but now it's the opposite. We'll call it a temperamental Jag moment and get on with it. I only have part of the second row of sky to FMQ. I'll switch to a cotton thread for the night sky.๐Ÿ˜
  • I'm having so much fun sewing my hexies now that I've found the right fabric. It's lovely to sew them when I don't have the energy to FMQ.
  • There are 5 double flowers to make, three clusters of four flowers and then two clusters of three flowers. That's doable by mid August.
  • I'm really happy with the hexies for my Bloomers SAL but I'm going to try to wait until the Rainbow Neighbourhood quilt is finished before making the last flower block and sewing everything together.

Slow Progress and I Quilted This!

Hi and welcome ๐Ÿ˜Š The last week has been busy so there's not much progress on my projects. We're expecting slightly cooler weather that I hope to enjoy.

Summer Hexie Sew Along

I finally decided on the fabric for my hexie wreath and made four hexie flowers to see how they look. Week one of the sew along is to make two groups of three flowers, while week two is making one group of four flowers (which I guess I made) and then one double flower.

Four hexie flowers

At the back of the photo below you can see the four main fabric that I'll be using for the wreath. Most of the scraps in front will be used for the centre of the hexie flowers, or possibly the middle ring of the double hexie flowers. This should give me enough fabric to experiment with.

Fabric pull for the hexies

The sew along suggests using 1" hexies but since my Scrappy Hexie Blanket is made with ¾" hexies, I've decided to use these for the sew along. This way if I make flowers that don't really go with the rest, I can just add them to the blanket.

with Mad About Patchwork

FMQ More Rooves

I finished FMQ the rooves of the evening houses and started on the first of the regular houses. A few people commented on how well I had FMQ the roof last week. The stars must have been aligned or it was beginner's luck because the other houses haven't been as good ๐Ÿ˜•It's all good because eventually I'll be washing the quilt and it'll all look great!

You can see in the next two photos that the top row of the shingles stick out a bit - that's because they bunched up a bit. That's why I'm hoping that washing the quilt will help.

FMA clamshells for a shingles look

Quilting the roof with slightly larger clamshells

On the other hand, I learned from my experience and stitched the horizontal lines in before FMQ the clamshells. It really helped.

FMQ the roof clamshells after quilting horizontal lines to follow

Blue Jays Appliquรฉ

I went shopping with my DIL for some fun fabric for her Blue Jays appliquรฉ. I'll be washing the fabric and making it this weekend. Here's the mock up and the new fabric.

Blue Jays mock up
New fun fabric
What I learned
  • Choosing fabric for the hexie wreath was difficult because I had 4 fabrics that are from the same line but also have the same values. In my scrap box, I found enough coordinating fabric that are darker or just different.
  • I'm not sure how they will work together but worse case scenario they'll be integrated into the scrappy blanket ๐Ÿ˜
  • As I mentioned earlier the two evening houses on which I FMQ the rooves ended up with some bunching in the top clamshell row. I solved that the next time by stitching horizontal lines before stitching the clamshells.
  • Once the quilt is washed, I don't think that the bunching will show much.
  • I didn't get much FMQ done this week so I'll have to push myself to keep going. I find that the heat and humidity just zap the energy out of me, even if I don't go outside.
  • My son and DIL are going to a Blue Jays game in Toronto around the 25th, so I hope to have the t-shirt done in time. That would be cool.
