SAHRR Round 1 - hour-glass block

Hi and welcome ๐Ÿ˜Ž Today is a short post to share with you my hour-glass blocks from the Stay At Home Round Robin (SAHRR).

Hour-glass blocks

I want to thank Brenda at Songbird Designs for the links to a great tutorial for the hour-glass block. Since I can make half-square triangles, two at a time, I can make an hour-glass block. Yay! Simple is my idea of fun ๐Ÿ˜

Centre block and hour-glass blocks

It  took me longer to take the above picture than it did to make the four blocks! Crazy ๐Ÿ˜ The blocks may end up on the corners, where the horizontal and vertical rows meet, but it turned out to be much easier to take the picture this way. Like I've mentioned before, my design wall is small.

Below is the fabric that I've curated for this project. Of course I reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

This weekend Poppy visited with my son & DIL. We had a great time.

What I learned & updates
  • You may have noticed that Project Quilting (PQ) didn't get done here. Sometimes you have to prioritize family ๐Ÿ’— and rest.
  • I was able to make the hour-glass blocks easily. Thanks for the great tutorial (see Related links).
  • My hour-glass blocks are roughly 5½" but I won't trim them until everything is done.
  • I have some lovely fabric picked - even a few from the original blocks.
  • I was thinking of making some tiny hour-glass blocks within a block....we'll see.
  • Poppy was so happy to visit but didn't get to run in the back yard - there's over a foot of snow and not much wildlife hanging out, except the rabbits.
  • I haven't made my first blue house, but it'll be ready by Thursday. I took out some fabric scraps. We're half way there ๐Ÿ˜.
  • The Cowboy panel quilt is coming along...but I have some unstitching to do - the backing fabric got folded under and needs to be fixed ๐Ÿ˜“

  1. Oh Andree, don't you just love it when the backing folds under and you have to unstitch your quilting! Yep, I've done it more than once. My blue house is ready except for top stitching down the fused elements.

    1. Sounds great Kat - I'll be writing the post for Sat. I'm happy to say that the unstitching wasn't as bad as I excepted. It seems that once you start, it sort of loosens up.

    1. Thanks Kate. It's funny but I haven't used that palette in years. It's nice to get back to it. When I was away at school, I dressed in gray and maroon. I guess they would have been in style back then lol

  5. Zounds! That center of your SAHRR is great fun! And the hourglass blocks will be a great addition -- can't wait to see how it all flows together. Obviously you have some fun plans in mind.

    1. Thanks Joy. As I was working on the round 2, I made some smaller hour-glass blocks. It'll be fun to get them playing together, especially since they're different sizes! :-)

  8. Love the colors and blocks so far. Sorry you have to unpick the quilting on the cowboy quilt.

    1. Thanks Anne-Marie, it's never fun to unpick but it wasn't as bad as I expected, and I promptly trimmed the quilt after that :-)

    1. Thanks so much Brenda. It's much more fun this year without 2 projects!
