Project Quilting 16-2 Ombre Challenge

Hi and welcome 😊 I'm up late Sunday morning to finish my Project Quilting (PQ) challenge - creating something with ombre fabric. Here is a short post on what I made.

Ombre fabric

I had no idea what to make with ombre fabric. I have a few fat quarters of the Snippets collection by Chelsea DesignWorks for StudioE fabrics. A year ago I made a student agenda cover for my niece in the black fabric. This time I decided to use the bright to dark blue but I didn't know what to make.

Finally on Friday I realised that I've been wanting to make something to carry my reading glasses and phone around the house. I started searching bags, cellphone bags and finally found what I wanted under small pouch patterns. I wanted it easy to make with no zipper. I also needed it to expand. I thought that I would have to box the bottom but finally the tutorial I found had pleats - even better!

If you read my post in early January, you'll know that I cut up a favourite pair of PJ bottoms and used the lovely fabric to line my agenda/journal. I had some left (the other leg 😁) and used it as lining for this pouch. When I see that fabric, it makes me smile.

I didn't take any process pictures but it was simple enough to make and I'm really happy that it came out because I had no idea what size to make it. I was hoping to put the glasses and phone at the bottom of the pouch, one on top of the other, but it's not quite wide enough. It does hold them well side by side.

It's not really obvious that the fabric on the case is ombre, but you can see it underneath the case. It's quite lovely.

What I learned

The most difficult part of this challenge was figuring out what I wanted to make, and then finding the correct words to search.
I found a great tutorial by sewingtimes (see link below)
I'm really happy that it worked out because I had difficulty figuring out what size to make it.
Adding the pleat on the sides of the bottom part of the pouch is very useful, but I should have made it just a little larger.
Now that I know what I'm doing, I might make more of these. They might also be cool to FMQ.
Did you notice my new Oliso iron and wool pad? I got them for Christmas. They are really great.

Progress on hexie and neutral quilts

I have two quilt projects on the go, and today I'll be sharing my progress on both.

Epic Neutral Bow Tie Quilt

I wrote a post on my Epic Neutral Bow Tie quilt in June. As I mentioned there, I really love this quilt since it's fairly easy but interesting and it can be made a batch at a time. I've finished my second batch.

A third of the blocks have been made. I'm not too sure how to deal with a couple of fabrics that could easily read as very light brown or darker off-white. You can see one of these over the word "brown" in the block above. In this case, I paired it with a dark brown fabric. I think that once the whole quilt is put together that it will be fine. I'll just have to place these a little more carefully.

I'm always astounded by the variety of colours that can be included in brown and off-white. Thank goodness that they usually play well together.

Kingfisher Stitch-Along

The English Paper Piecing project is coming along quite well considering all of the hand-work involved. I really love working on it and it's perfect for doing while listening to audio books. I'm very grateful for our public library's great collection.

These were the first 5 diamonds that I put together a couple of weeks ago.

This is what I have done so far - slow but steady!

I bought a great plastic tote to organise my hexies. At the very bottom is my background fabric, then my cut diamonds, hexies ready to applique and finally a bag of scraps for more hexie flowers.

The container has a second part where I can place my templates, hexies to be pieced, as well as thread and needles. I've placed the appliqued hexies on top so that they don't get crushed.

Finally, I am using my new Selvage Love pouch to bring my hexies with me to work during my lunch break. It easily carries everything I need to sew my hexies together.

Today I just received the Papyrus Batiks fat quarter bundle by Hoffman Fabrics from the Fat Quarter Shop. They will make a fine addition to the three other background fabrics I have.

What I learned

Amazingly enough, progress is good and there have been few lessons to learn to date.
I'm just going to have to work through the very light brown or darker off-white issue for the Epic Neutral Bow Tie Quilt. It's nothing major, as long as I'm consistent and that I pair these with very dark or very light fabrics.
My organising tote has come in handy. I've also lugged around my Selvage Love pouch - it's really useful, and both will continue to be useful for other projects also.

Squirrels and July plans

Even though I have tons of projects on the go, I can't help but be sidetracked by new ~~shiny~~ colourful things!

Squirrel project

My Squirrel project this month is a lovely pouch called "Selvage Love" that was designed by Kristy Lea of Make Modern Magazine.

I've been wanting to make something with selvage strips for a while now. This seemed like the perfect little project. I added a pocket to the inside lining so it should be useful.

If you're wondering why I called it a "Squirrel" project, it's because it's one of those unplanned projects - Drop Everything And Make it! just like someone distracted by a squirrel :-) I'll be posting it on mmm! Quilts' Dreami! linking party.

One Monthly Goal (OMG)

My OMG for July is to finish my latest (third) batik lap quilt. I ran out of thread in April and I finally got around to order more and received it last week. It's orange and teal blue Kimono Silk Thread. I'm using the orange for the back, and teal for the front of the quilt.

This is the first larger quilt that I use an all-over design. Since I fell in love with the Feather Meander during Angela Walters' FMQ Challenge Quilt-Along.

Since it's been a couple of months, I'll have to practice the design a little, but I'm confident that it won't take long before I'm back into a groove 😊

What I learned

I'm glad that I took some time to create the pouch. When I work on longer projects like the EPP Hexie flowers, I need a little quick project to distract me. This was a good one, and I will probably end up using it to carry my hexies supplies.
I had a little trouble with the pattern since I had never added zipper tabs to a pouch before. I turned them the wrong side but it wasn't a huge problem. Now I know that zipper tabs keep your zipper from opening or closing all the way so that it doesn't get undone.
