My finish this week is a Batik Lap Quilt for a friend. This lap quilt is made of two Los Cobos Batiks charm packs (5 inch squares) by Moda and some squares from my stash. I also quilted it using Kimono Silk Thread, which I ran out of half way through!
This was the first time that I free motion quilted (FMQ) the same design all over the quilt. It was the feather meander design that I learned from Angela Walter's FMQ Challenge earlier this year.

Picnic shot of the Batik Lap Quilt |
This morning's photo session was a real treat - sunny but not too hot. I went to one of my favourite places to photograph my work, just outside of the building I work in. Even if the grass is yellow everywhere, the brick and grasses are always great for photographing quilts.
A peak at the back |
Here's a close-up shot of the quilting. The FMQ went really well except when I was quilting on the lighter blue fabric - it was almost invisible and I had a lot of trouble seeing my feathers!
Close-up of the FMQ feather meander design |
- This was a really great project to practice my FMQ. The feather meander design is really great.
- By the end of the quilting though, I was getting a little bored and my feathers were getting pretty creative. I just may have to play with this a little more - who knows, I could come up with a variation of my own!
- I've learned my lesson - this is the last time that I will buy only 2 charm packs for this kind of quilt. It sort of defeats the purpose when you still have to cut more squares.
- I was able to put this lesson to practice because I was the June OMG link-up's lucky winner a a $25 gift certificate from the Fat Quarter Shop. I bought 3 beautiful batik charm packs to make my next lap quilt. You see? Eventually lessons learned do stick (at least for a while). Thank you so much Patty of Elm Street Quilts and the Fat Quarter Shop for a great gift.

I love this bright quilt and the quilting compliments it quilt wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lisa. I really enjoyed working on it - it's my favourite kind of quilt - easy to piece with lots of place to quilt :-)
DeleteWhat a lovely colourful quilt and so many lessons learned for one quilt :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. Easy batik quilts are so much fun to make and give...and I try to learn from all of my quilts :-)
DeleteI've never machine quilted with silk before, great job! Thanks for hosting TGIFF
ReplyDeleteThanks Paige. I usually use my silk threads for more artsy quilts but I couldn't resist and know that this quilt will be well taken care of.
DeleteThank you for hosting TGIFF! Your quilt is so bright and pretty! A quilt like this is perfect for an all over quilting design!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jayne, and I agree that all over was a good choice. It was nice to practice that one FMQ design!
DeleteVery colorful quilt - love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks Susan! These are my favourite quilts to make - quick, easy and colourful!
DeleteI have done the same thing where I only bought two charm packs and got all frustrated when it wasn't enough. If you don't totally use that third pack, they will be worked into something else, I am sure. Great finish!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bernie. I always use that third pack. I like those lap quilts as big as possible to cozy up in :-)
DeleteCongrats on the finish. It looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Anja!
DeleteWhat great rich colors! and they do look so great against the Gray ( Grey?) Congrats on the finish!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alycia, they do look good against the grey! I have to admit that I hadn't noticed. And both version are correct - gray for the US and grey for UK and in Canada we do what ever we want :-)
DeleteI've heard great things about Kimono silk thread! I think it's time for me to try it, too.
ReplyDeleteHi Becca, I do recommend it. I indulged a couple of years ago and joined Superior Thread's monthly club for Kimono. I wasn't able to keep it up for the full year, but I have a lovely collection :-)
DeleteHello Andrée
ReplyDeleteThe colours in your lap quilt are gorgeous! Your friend is sure to be delighted with it. I love the way you ended up varying the quilting pattern as time went on. That's what makes FMQ so interesting.
Thank you for linking up with Free Motion Mavericks. Your quilt is project of the week!
Love, Muv
Hi Muv, how wonderful! I guess I've never quilted one pattern long enough to get bored :-) I'm glad I'm not the only one. Try to stay cool.
DeleteSuch pretty FMQ! Thanks for linking up with Elm Street Quilts One Monthly Goal and congrats on your finish.
ReplyDeleteThanks Patty. I had a double motivation to finish it this month! Now on to the next finish :-) Have a great weekend and thanks again for hosting!
DeleteWhat a beautiful finish!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Beth!
DeleteSuch a bright happy quilt. Lucky friend who receives it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen. I hope that it will keep her cozy on winter nights!
DeleteSuper finish, I hope you are rested and recovered now! And congrats on the OMG win, can't wait to see your new purchases in action. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Dione! I've been reading a lot, so that would be my R&R. I've already started using part of my OMG win of off-white batik fat quarters for more background in the Kingfisher stitch along. I won't be using the charm packs until I promise someone a lap quilt :-)
DeleteWhat a beautiful finish! Andree, i love it so much
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Alex!
