Another Hexie Mania

I hope that February has been treating you well. Personally, I'm getting ready for Spring, whether Mother Nature cooperates or not 😊 Actually after some cold and lots of snow, they are predicting above freezing during the upcoming days. I'll take it!

Hexie Mania

Since the last few weeks have been about resting, I've been adding to my hexie collection. It's about as slow and mindless as it gets.

Progress on my hexie blanket

This is what it looked like the last time I played with it. Generally the mass of hexies are from the 100 Hexies in 100 Days parties on Instagram (2018 and 2019) #100hexies100days2018 and #100hexies100days2019  You can find out more in Related link below.

Three hexie flowers on one edge

I won't bore you with a play-by-play but here are the highlights 😊

Adding large hexie flowers to the edge

Eight hexie flowers on the border

Adding the ninth hexie flower

My very loose plan is to add flower hexies around the borders and probably some white or beige hexies around those to finish it off.  I now have the width of the lap quilt, so it's a matter of adding to the height and then to keep adding flower hexies around the borders.

What I learned

  • I'm not going for beautiful but I hope that the flowers around the mass of bright fabric in the middle will help bring it together. Anyway it's too much work to give to anyone...this is my mass of bright fabric 😎
  • It's amazing how much this project has grown since the beginning of February. Doing hexies and listening to audio books has been a real treat. Very calm!
  • As I add to the middle puddle of hexies, I think that I'll sneak in a few odd shapes to keep it interesting. A diamond or two certainly can't hurt!

  1. Wow, so much work. I'm always amazed by the folks who have the patience to make a hexie quilt.

    1. Hi Sharon, it is a lot of work but I love the slow pace and I can sit in my rocking chair in the living room and listen to an audiobook - so it really is calm and rather mindless. I do get bored eventually, but then I either make a flower or find other fabrics to use. Thanks for dropping by. Take care.

    1. Hi Kathy, it really is relaxing. I borrow audiobooks from our library so it's even economical! I discovered that I love having someone read to me. Thanks for hosting and take care.

  4. I like your idea of big flowers around the perimeter! It's like a cultivated garden where the middle is a meadow full of little wildflowers.

    1. Thanks Gayle, I really needed something to contrast with the very unruly middle part. Making large flowers also makes it less boring. When I get tired of the flowers then I go find other fabrics in my stash. Diversity is a great thing. Thanks for dropping by and take care.

  5. What a glorious colourful piece this is. Lots of y seams there! I too listen to audio books while stitching my much larger hexies. Happy Stitching from me not that far away here in the Ottawa Valley.

    1. Thanks Jocelyn. Aren't audiobooks awesome? I usually borrow them from the Ottawa Public Library - I love that I don't have to bring them back since it's all virtual. You must live in the outskirt of Ottawa - I'm in the burbs in Orleans. Thanks for visiting and take care.

  6. Superbe !

    1. Thanks Sherrie. I do love my hexies! I'm not sure that it will get done soon although the 100 hexies in 100 days starts on Instagram in March, so that will keep me going :-) Take care and have a great day too!

  8. I taught an EPP class last year to non-quilters and ever since have looked forward to embarking on a project like this. Love what you are doing, keep up the relaxing stitching!

    1. Hi Vivian, I hope that you start on such a project soon - it is very relaxing! What I love about this is that there is no planning involved except to sort of get the size right before adding the larger flowers - and that's far from accurate. I'm thinking of using some white-on-white fabric for the outside border to help level it off....but we'll see. Thanks for dropping by and take care.

    1. Thank you lovely Kim. Your enthusiasm is contagious! I loved your clamshell quilt and blue hydrangeas. It's hard to believe that it's almost fall in your area. I am sooooo looking forward to spring and even did some research so that I can grow some clover instead of some weedy grass in the back yard. I also found some lovely grasses. They are annuals around here but if they are not too much work and self seed a little bit, it could be just fantastic. Take care. :-)

  12. Wow! That is a lot of stitching. The hexie flowers are adding some structure and calming down all those middle colors. It's going to be a fun and bright finish.

    1. Thanks Kate, that's exactly what I'm going for. It's been growing since 2018. It sure would be nice if it was done in the next couple of years! Thanks for dropping by and hosting a great party. Take care.

  13. You amaze me with your hexies! I've made one 'flower' I turned into a wreath ornament for our tree, and that's IT. Ha. These are looking so pretty.

    1. Thanks Sandra. For some reason I just got hooked. I absolutely adore the La Passion hexies but that's way too precise for me. The 100 hexies in 100 days on Instagram is starting again in March, so the middle garden will keep growing. Take care.

    1. Thanks Alycia. They are really mindless to do, especially if combined with a good audiobook. Rest or not, there is no way that I can not do something creative! I've also done some lovely fabric dyeing....but that's for another post :-) I guess it is time to get back to work next week. Take care.

  16. Your hexies are glorious, Andrée! I watch other people’s EPP projects with the same fascination that I watch someone run over hot coals, sky dive or swallow a flaming sword: That is so cool — but I am pretty sure I shouldn’t try it myself! ;-)

  17. That's a lot of hexies, more than I have time for!

  18. I love your hexies! I've started making some out of circles too and hope to make a handbag out of them:)
